The Eucharistic Miracle in Lanciano, the relics of Saint Thomas the Apostle in Ortona; the Volto Santo in Manoppello, Saint Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows in Isola del Gran Sasso are the most famous reference points of a journey that involves also the province of L'Aquila. The regional chief town preserves in the Basilica of Santa Maria di Collemaggio the relics of Saint Peter Celestine V and it's preeminently the cult place tied to that Pope.
This is the context where rises in 2001 the plan “Tourism through the Paths of Religion, History and Culture”, now at its fourth year. The plan that involves the Archdioceses of Lanciano-Ortona; Chieti-Vasto; Pescara-Penne; Teramo-Atri and the Diocese of L'Aquila, together with the four Abruzzo provinces and the following cities, aims to develop the tourist demand towards Abruzzo basing itself on the existence of the cultural and ecclesiastical heritage in order to make it suitably enjoyable for tourists.
